On the Olympics and Training - Compete or Complete?

The 2010 Winter Olympics have impacted my training.  What inspiration!  What a party!

Seeing world class athletes at peak performance in the most competitive events in the world has caused me to think about what could have been and what can still be.

The Olympic Torch

Yesterday was a big day:  I got to see the Olympic torch relay as it wove its way through my neighborhood, I got to hold the torch and hang-out with the torch-bearer... and I got a workout in on the spin bike at the gym!

2010 Olympics - Share Your Run with a Visitor Challenge

I used to have to travel a lot for work.  Most of the time I'd end up alone in a big city in a big hotel.

Jackson's Planning Template for a Big Race

Blame it on injuries, kids, budget, time or whatever, it's been a while since I participated in a race that really, really meant a lot to me.

I was so jazzed the first time I ran the Boston Marathon, I couldn't sleep for a full week leading up to it.  At the start in Hopkinton, I was so nervous that I pee'd down my leg.  (Yes, in a big crowd of runners as the announcer counted down!  No, I wasn't the only one, either!)

Best Ultra Marathons in Canada

I was recently approached for a list of the best ultra marathons in Canada.  Ones that are crazy, fun, historic or are otherwise noteworthy.  I thought I pass the question on to you.  What are your favorites?

My personal list (out of races I have either done and volunteered at) is:

Welcome to 2010

Welcome to 2010 everyone.  Every year New Years day means one thing for me - Test of Metal registration.  Sign in late and you will miss out.  This year The Test sold out in 24 minutes and I was lucky enough to register for my 5th year in a row.  Last year I was able to beat my previous personal best by over 30 minutes and finished in 3:28 - that is a high bar for me to beat this year.

I hope everyone gets to participate in the events that they would like to, no matter how big or small.

Graham Archer.

Orcas Island50K trip.

I am wondering if any of my Vancouver friends are planning to make the trip down for the race?

I am entered, and on a standby for the Harriers bus which is, at the moment full!

Friday is a free day for me so I could easilly get over to your city  for the trip down across the border to Anacortes for the ferry to the Island.

Unfortunately in the winter that is the only way for us Islanders to get there...

Any cost incured will be shared.

Here's hoping....

2010 Calendar of Canadian Ultras

I am in the process of updating the Canadian Ultras Calendar that Club Fat Ass has been "hosting" on our website.

If you are an RD of a Canadian Ultra Run, please take a moment to let me know the date and specifics for your 2010 event.  It would be most helpful, if you use this form to update your event.

Road Trip - Bellingham - Sat 19 Dec

The Galbraith Mountain Tour is coming up soon.  Anyone in Vancouver interested in car-pooling?

My highlights of the last time I went were Daniel's Mom serving up donuts at the start, great views from the top of Galbraith Mountain, dark ale and Mexican food at the finish.  Maybe get in a little Christmas shopping with robust Canadian dollars, too?
