What: A 72K run on the Baden Powell Trail between Deep Cove and Lynn Canyon.
Why: A few Fools in the club have signed up for the Coyote Two Moon 100 Mile race in March that has 28,000 feet of uphill and they really, really need to get in some distance and hill work.
Who: The Fools and anyone who wants to join in the fun.
Where: Meet at Panorama Park in Deep Cove, North Vancouver, BC
Climbing: According to some very informative GPS readings taken by Colin Freeland during the 2007 Pure Satisfaction Run each loop of the route has an elevation gain of 5,280 feet, giving a total of 15,840 feet of climbing during the three loops.
Aid: Be prepared to be self-sufficient. There should be water at Deep Cove and at the Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge washrooms. Of course we will also have access to our vehicles when we return to Deep Cove at the end of each loop.
Schedule:
Here is a foolproof schedule of the times the Fools expect to be at
various locations during the run. This schedule was created by half of
one of the brightest minds in Club Fat Ass. It follows the detailed
methodology developed by the famous Dr. Wingit, PHD. After an
exhaustive five second review by a panel of his peers the method was
named the SWAG method (Scientific Wild Ass Guess).
This schedule may be useful to those of you planning to only do
portions of the run and want to join the Fools, or perhaps avoid them
altogether. Note that the Fools may not be at these locations at the
times indicated, or anywhere close to those times. If you do a custom
run email your distance and time to Karl through the private email link
shown on the event site.
Please keep in mind the event Motto.

Entry: There is no fee and you don't need to be a member of Club Fat Ass to participate in a Flash event, however whining is not allowed. No registration is required but please indicate your participation via the comment form below. You are responsible for your own well being and safety and should be self sufficient. Please read the Release of All Claims. By participating in this event you agree to the terms of the Release of All Claims.

The run started with a light rain that became quite lumpy and turned to snow at higher elevations. At the top of the Seymour Grind there was well over an inch of snow, which made descending the steep technical sections quite a challenge. The snow was very wet in the lower sections and where there wasn’t snow there were unavoidable puddles and mud. Everyone suffered with cold, wet feet throughout. Ellie and Bill sprinted out from the start in their usual fashion. On the return from Lynn Canyon they decided to take a side trip onto Old Buck for some bonus miles. Everyone else proceeded at a more civilized pace. Cheryl, Rhonda and Arthur overcame the difficult conditions and completed one 24K loop. John talked Cynnimon through two loops. Way to go Cynnimon, very impressive. Craig came out to pace John and Gilles for their last loop, which was done mostly in the dark. Karl struggled all day to keep up with Chad. Laddie had flown in from Prague just so she could run out to meet Chad and Karl on the Seymour Grind and pace them in to finish their second loop, a touching gesture that deserves a heartfelt thanks. Al joined Chad and Karl for their third loop, and pushed the pace a bit more than was comfortable for one of them. At the beginning of the third and final return from Lynn Canyon Al and Chad sped away leaving Karl to his fate in the darkness of the wild. He was sorely pained to be abandoned by Chad after 60K for someone younger, faster and better looking. However, on reaching the Old Buck Bridge, Karl found them waiting for him because Chad had become concerned that Karl had not caught up. An emotional moment indeed. Thanks Chad.
Throughout the run everyone followed the Foolproof Directions. Just before the descent to Deep Cove the trail splits and the runners have to take the left fork down. Al and Chad went straight and had to backtrack, followed a few minutes later by Karl who made the same mistake. The run Motto was thus validated.
Special thanks go to Lucinda and Linda who appeared at Lynn Canyon with a couple of pizzas, wonderful. And to Lorraine who spent the better part of her day at Hyannis Point womaning an aid station. The grilled cheese sandwiches on the third loop were a big hit.
Submitted by Gilles Barbeau on 20 January, 2008 - 20:04.
We couldn't do this without them. Thanks Lorraine, Linda and Lucinda for supporting the insanity.
Linda and Lucinda, despite facing a steep fine, were waiting for us after hours with hot soup at Lynn Valley. We all missed them because everybody was off the schedule. Nevertheless it says a lot about the dedication of those two lovely galls and how hard the day was for us.
Lorraine certainly deserves some bonus points. First for setting such a lovely spread of high calorie food and for showing repeatedly, always waiting a long time for the monkeys to show up.
Minor correction to the results. Cynnimon completed 48km which didn't seems to phase her one bit.
Submitted by Karl Jensen on 20 January, 2008 - 21:03.
All af the supporting crew were wonderful. They deserve major points. I'm sorry to have missed the soup. It would have been nice before heading back into the cold.
Don't know how I screwed up Cynnimon's distance. As an accountant you would think I can add 24 plus 24. Sorry Cynnimon, I'll fix it if I can figure out how.

Congratulations on finishing a tough run in tough conditions! I was thinking of you guys while shivering up on Dog Mtn. last night. In fact, as we were driving up Seymour Mtn. Road we were looking for you at the BP crossing. Alas, timing didn't work out. Glad everybody made it off the trails safe and sound. Participants of Flash Events do not qualify for event points, but are there crew bonus points in order, Karl???
Submitted by Sibylle Tinsel on 21 January, 2008 - 10:16.
I shall give Lorraine, Lucinda and Linda crew points for the point series. They will show up after the next scheduled event (Squamish Scrambler 10 February).

You guys rock! It was cold, darn cold and wet all morning.
Tons of fun in the snow and starting in the dark but the cold beat me after one loop. I was in awe watching you head out from Deep Cove on the third lap .... still cold & already getting dark again!!
Besides being amazing runners, thank you for always freely sharing information and encouragement. It helps!
Submitted by Craig Moore on 20 January, 2008 - 13:03.
congratulations to Karl, Chad, Gilles and John for their 72km yesterday. It was a long day for the boys but there was a good bit of company. From Lynn Canyon around 1:00'ish, I got to run with John and Gilles along with Cynnimon at the end of her 2 laps, and see the others along the way. They promised (insisted) that I go the distance and eat their food at Deep Cove. I'm glad I did the out and back for one loop so I could share Gille's great chips and yummy oatmeal raisin cookies from Capers, mmmmmmmmmm mmmmmmmmmmmm. And how about those mid evening grilled cheese sandwiches from Lorraine at Hyannis, holy cow that hit the spot. The snow was great and the mud was deep. Way to go everyone!

Actually got in the parking lot on time, but couldn't feel my foot with the ankle brace.
Adjusted it and hit the trailhead at 6:15am, tried to bushwhack, paddywack for 30 minutes, wound up back in the parking lot, I don't even know how that was possible.
Had some sudden, urgent gastrointestinal issues, figured the DC washroom is open. Still locked, barely made it home in time.
Today is not my day, damn you, Pure Satisfaction course, I will return...later.

Sure have my respect. Wow you guys and girls are nutty for attempting this. I would have loved to join the foolishness; however, I'm off to Mt. Washington to do the Yeti snowshoe race. I'll be thinking of you guys finishing on the ferry trip back from the Island. I'll make sure I make it out for your next episode at PF96k.

On one of the Races, perhaps the Haney to Harrison Relay, someone rode in my car and left a very nice (& heavy) stainless steel Starbucks coffee mug on the floor of my back seat of the car. Could it be Suhki's, Jackie's, Ellie's or ??? Please let me know who to return it to.

Bill D. and I really want to run probably 1.5 loops of this run, preferably starting a little later than 6am. We both live in Vancouver (rather than North Van) and are looking for a ride over to the start (we can get back by transit). If any one has space in their car, let me know. Payment can be made in the volunteers choice of post run caffeine and honeys donuts!

Hi,
I can give a ride to the start for that nominal fee if you do not have one already.
the time?
How does 1 1/2 work?
Wouldn't it be easier to do 2?

I hope to see all of you out there at some point. I'll be running from my place in Lynn Valley around 8 or 9:00 am and heading toward the Cove. Good luck to all and be prepared for cold, wet, and muddy fun.
I'm hoping to join you guys. I'm thinking that two loops could be the order of the day, but will see nearer the time and dependent who I can drag along (Bill? Jackie?)

Hi, I would like to run with someone who might be running my speed. I ran New Year's Day Freeze Your Ass Off 50 Km. If I did not get lost, I would have taken about 6:50 hours. This was my first 50 km. I also ran Pure Satisfaction and got lost but if I did not get lost, I would have taken about 5:00 - 5:30 for 24 Km.
Submitted by Sibylle Tinsel on 7 January, 2008 - 17:46.
Hi Arthur,
Wow, you are all guns blazing...That's one tough course to run 48km on - translates into 10 hours...Do not forget the flashlight ;-)
Check the post below this one from Cheryl. She runs about your speed, a bit faster than me, but slower than you. Looks like Cheryl will be out on the trail that morning.
I think I had enough "Pure Aggravation", uh, Pure Satisfaction to pass on Pure Foolishness. My body needs to recuperate a bit form New Years Day...
Submitted by Craig Moore on 13 January, 2008 - 16:09.
there's more than enough Pure Challenge to go around I see. I expect you to fully recover and get back out there Sibylle. We have a lot of training to do before July!
By the way Arthur, there's no shame in being lost on a CFA run ... only shameful if you don't share the adventure with all of us.
Submitted by Sibylle Tinsel on 13 January, 2008 - 16:22.
I may reconsider closer to the day. Haven't run since New Years Day because of my hip. Focusing on stretching and discovered the treadmill in the gym - hip didn't hurt on that thing - but I only went for 10min before getting terribly bored ;-)
I need to focus on my speed and some road runs until May or so...

Submitted by Cheryl Johnson on 8 January, 2008 - 16:02.
Hey Arthur, you are very welcome to join us in the Pure Foolishness run. Yes, I know the way. We are planning on one x full course, out and back from Deep Cove. Then, we will do a 1/2 loop. We are leaving a car at Jaycee House and on the final loop we will continue on, probably through the cemetery and to the car.
Maybe 6 hours. We can get water at Lynn Canyon Cafe but bring bars/gels and clothing options.
