Now that the 2007 racing season is winding down,
it’s time to start planning how to make 2008 a year of personal
bests!
Tired of putting in the training hours but not
really improving? Interested in taking the guesswork out of your training?
Have you ever wondered what exactly to do with your heart rate monitor?
This session is designed to answer all of your questions about using heart rate
training zones to add precision to your training. The seminar will
explain the physiology that heart rate training zones are based on, how to get
your individual training zones measured and discuss how to use them to
determine which of your thresholds is limiting your improvement. By
focusing your training on your limiting thresholds, you eliminate the junk miles and focus your
training hours so they lead directly to performance improvements at your
particular sport and race distance. Topics discussed will include blood
lactate, lactic acid, muscle fibre types, aerobic threshold, lactate threshold,
VO2 max, heart rate training zones and most importantly, how to use the
information in your training.

Centre, Vancouver, where she tests and trains athletes from recreational to
national and professional level. Previously, she was the Director of the
Human Performance Lab and Manager of Performance Sport at the University of Birmingham
in the U.K.
She holds her Masters of Kinesiology (University of Calgary, 1996) and

(ISAK). She is also an accredited Director and member of the British
Association of Sport & Exercise Sciences (BASES) was a supervisor on its
Supervised Experience program for young sports scientists. She has a Certified
Exercise Physiologist qualification with the Canadian Society of Exercise
Physiology.
The Discovery Channel did a piece with Peak Performance
in July in conjunction with the ITU Vancouver Triathlon on the science of
training where one of the top Canadian triathletes was in their lab getting
tested. Check out http://broadband.discoverychannel.ca/discovery/?id=3477&vid=17618

Thank you so much for your time and insights, Anita. I've been "sold" on the concept of heart rate and zone-based training for quite a while, but have slacked off a lot over the past few years. Hearing you speak about all of the advances in knowledge about human performance has got me very excited about getting back on a program. I'm about to enter a new age category and would love to end this year with some hardware. While the prospect of having to do intervals in the rain doesn't get me
all that excited, I very much look forward to working with you to
figure out how to get the most out of what I've got. Sign me up!
